Indian Tourism

India in recent years has gained good exponential growth in the tourism industry, both Internationally and on Domestic Grounds.

Milestones achieved by Indian Tourism :
  • Ranked 14th in the world for best Tourist Destinations
  • Ranked 24th for its Cultural Resources, as it has most of the World Heritage Sites and rich floura and fauna.

Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India (FTA)

  • Over 10 million foreign tourists arrived in India, in 2017 compared to 8.89 millionin 2016, recording a growth of 15.6%.
  • India has been the major attractions of tourists from Bangladesh, United States and United Kingdom, contributing shares of 15.68%, 14.73% and 10.7% respectively to the total FTA in India in 2016.

Factors influencing Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) in India




There are several factors affecting Foreign Tourism Demand according to Jana Vencovska's Bachelor Thesis "The Determinants of International Tourism Demand", Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Economic Studies):

I. Gross Domestic Product (in India Rupee Billions), which is further classified into several categories:

-> CQRSA: National currency, current prices, quarterly levels, seasonally adjusted.
-> CQR: National currency, current prices, quarterly levels.
-> VNBQRSA: National currency, constant prices, national base year, quarterly levels, seasonally adjusted.
-> VNBQR: National currency, constant prices, national base year, quarterly levels.

II. Foreign Exchange Earnings (in Indian Rupee Crores).

Each of the GDP categories have the following set of sub-categories:
1. Gross domestic product at market prices - output approach.
2. Gross value added at basic prices, total activity.
3. Agriculture, forestry and fishing.
4. Industry, including energy.
5. Manufacturing.
6. Construction.
7. Services.
8. Distrib. trade, repairs; transp.; accommod., food serv. activ.
9. Real estate activities.
10. Public admin., education, human health.

The Dataset

The FTA-Dataset, so created contains quarterly national accounts' data for the years starting from 2005 to 2016 which includes:

-> The aforementioned determinants of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India.
-> The number of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India.
